I don't know about you, but I am ready for the snow to be gone and the rain to wash away all the grime. I look forward to getting outside and cleaning up after the winter winds have left us with a few broken branches to clean up. I did see I have some Daffodils coming up and other semi green plants that winter over and green up early spring.

A Few Hearts

This picture was taken a few years ago, that was then, and then the picture below was taken now. Big difference a few years make in decorating. Our tastes change through the years and sometimes it might be for the better. See the hearts in the wooden bowl below, well they are the same hearts that are hanging from the pegs on the shelf. Since I have many more wool hearts(made by someone else) I grouped them together for a more visual display. Like them in the wooden bowl the best. I have many more hearts in wax and tin, and like them all.

For the last couple of years I have been wanting to hook some chair pads. Finally the time has come and I got one finished. You can find this pattern on www.goosnest.com.

A fresh look after the Christmas decorating is put away. This is an old bread board that has the checker board put on with a ink stain. I would guess this to be in the early 1900's.

New Wool Applique

These little squares were the most fun to put together. No rhyme or reason to the coloring. I just got out all my left over pieces of browns and tans. It made no difference if it was stripe or plain or plaid. I made the brown one first and then decided I would like to make a design using a color. Hence the red orange coming into play. Bet you can't tell by now what my color palette is can you? I do have a hard time straying away from my favorite Brown Sugars and Black Browns, throw in a little Rust and you pretty much have any background that I like.The other nice thing about these little squares, they travel easy. Are easy to sew and everybody wants to know what it is that you are making! You can tell there are two ways of using this table square. Intentionally is was made to be displayed like the one below. Then as I was pressing it I liked it on the diagonal. I used both of these in my home for fall and the Christmas season and today it will be used for Valentines Day decorating. Spring Bouquet

The flowers in this applique are done in a over dyed wool called Buttermilk Red. I loved the color, because it has a lot of faded variations from red to the red oranges. Although the pot that the flowers are in, may seem a little toward the pink side, it really has all the colors that the main design has. Using this stripe for the pot was a great idea. The dark background is a hidden dark chocolate plaid, which is over dyed.

Gooseberries and Bird

Back in August when at the cabin I gave you a sneak peek at this rug. I know that has been a while. Well it takes a Village to get things done and this was no exception! It is a larger rug with many other wool projects in between. It is now on my web site goosnest.com. I enjoyed working on this rug and used many dark colors for the background. The fan shapes in each corner gives the eye movement over the entire rug.

Last years Christmas wrapping with the red bows made for a striking look under tree. Here you can see some of my other paper I was telling about below. Sorry I can't get this picture to go under the other tree post. Read farther down and you will understand this post.

I love this hand made iron stand. I like it best with the wooden bowls. But I could also see it with crock jugs and crock bowls. Believe me I have enough of all of it to change later on. I just acquired the wooden barrel from Nelly's Nest. I set a wooden bowl on it and the tree set in side of it perfectly. I made the black wax Santa mold in the wooden bowl.

I got this twig looking tree last year and did all the silicone lights for it myself. Now I want you to know this was 700 lights. Really didn't take that long,once you got all set up. I like to have all my packages wrapped the same. This year I had to buy new paper and I started looking early in every store. I like the brown backgrounds that look like brown wrapping paper. I prefer Holly or Poinsettias or little stamped looking Christmas images on the paper.

This little twig tree is new this year. I put all my hand made little Santas and some repro tin Santa molds on it and the punched tin star was made by a friend.

Actually, 2 are wax and the 4 smallest Santas and one on the right are chalk Santas I painted black. The wax trees came from Target a couple of years ago and the deer are those old felt kind over a plastic body that I got for a dollar and painted them dark brown and rubbed cinnamon on them. I call that make do. I like this silhouette looking group and the shadows it cast on the wall behind.

This was a fun time for me to decorate for a friend. She has wonderful things to use for decorating and lots of cabinets and table tops to make wonderful vignettes. Some of the pictures are dark, but ah the mood it puts you in! Can't you just smell the fireplace burning and the scented candles.

What neat cut outs in the skates. They say size 11. The old sleigh bell is family also.

I think these are sweet with the hearts cut out. I wouldn't know which pair belonged to which boy at the time. They are made by the same company.

These two pictures of the skates are from my husband's Father and Uncle. His father was born in 1906. So assuming that he could have been 10 to 12 years old when he received these. I have had these for quite a few years and decided this year to display them by my front door.

Hooked Rugs

This rug, named Sunflower, was hooked in my class last year by Anette Cochrane. It was a design from the Rogue Hookers. Colors done in a primitive style, typical of Jan's color planning.

Elaine Hirter hooked this wonderful Turkey rug in all the muted and overdyed wools from the Rug Hooking Store at the Hook In in Nebraska City last year. I was pleased these girls brought the rugs back to show what they had accomplished and what a geat job they did. Thank you.

Rug Hooking Retreat

The rug hooking retreat was a lot of fun meeting new friends and seeing old friends from last years retreat.What a great way to spend three and a half days doing what you love to do. Our Retreat was held at The Lied Lodge Center in Nebraska City Ne.The Lodge is absolutely beautiful with a very warm and friendly atmosphere.

Pam Mosteck picked a Goos Nest pattern by Jan Goos called Small Cabbage Rose and Berries. We colored this is a very old faded rose and mottled greens for the leaves. This rug will have a gorgeous medium brown background.

Suzanne Burgoin picked another Goos Nest pattern called Summers End by Jan Goos and will look wonderful in these muted colors with her antique setting.

Eileen Hall is our all time marathon hooker. What a great job to achieve a completed hooked rug on the second day and she even had it steamed by the next morning! Now I have to say, our room was open until eleven at night. So she was not going to her room early girls! I think she had a plan and stuck to it. Wonderful colors and I loved it. Designed by Maggie Bonanomi.

Eileen's daughter,Lorie Curtis drew this pattern from one of Maggie's books. We color planned this in a very muted and soft old looking browns and greens with an over dyed medium light background. That background is really going to make the whole motif pop. I loved this one too.

I am so glad that no one wanted to burn these candles. Then there wouldn't be any for me to buy. I have picked these up at different antique shows and antique shops for several years. Now it is time to stop! I ran out of room! There is one turkey in this picture that is not a candle,can you guess? OK, that wasn't hard! Middle shelf, last one on the left. It was fun to find so many different colors and sizes. Now I really don't know if there are any more colors or sizes than what I have. But I might keep one eye open just incase.

I had a fun time showing something new I had hooked for the first time and kept it a secret for as long as I did. My Halloween Whirl was a big success and having it in a wool applique was just as nice. An old friend from the past pictured here, holding the mic, with me is someone I knew from about 20 some years ago, her name is Quink. She used to live in Omaha, now Colorado, and had put on a boutique with some other talented ladies around the hollidays. She is a wonderful designer and artist and has worked for many magazines through the years. I was so happy to get to see and talk to her again.

Fall Vignette

Went to my sisters house a few weeks ago,she had this arrangement on her kitchen table. It was so cool . Just couldn't resist taking a picture. Look close and you can see,there was wax pumpkins, cinnamon corn, bittersweet, waxed black corn and Indian corn. Wax candles that look like corn and wax candy corn. Wow this has a lot of great things that make my heart happy!! And not to say that the Pheasants are great too! Love those birds! They look pretty great with the rest of the vignette. Later on she can change out those birds with a Turkey and she is ready for Thanksgiving.

The reason I call these the Texas Urns, is because that is where they are. I was traveling with a friend to a show and these were in front of the place where we ate. It happened to be sprinkling, which made these a little more shinny looking. I loved them and thought how I could duplicate these when I got home. I have yet to do it. I can not get the two pictures separated. Sorry for the side photo.

This is the finished wool applique that I teased you with when at the cabin. Some had told me since they had seen the star, it was going to be patriotic. The wheels are turning! I was excited to do this wool piece, so many fun colors and could be colorized many different ways.

I took the advice of my friend, Janice Lee from The Rug Hooking Store in Valley Ne. and hooked Halloween Whirl. I had a lot of fun with the hooking. I didn't have to decide too much different in colors from the wool mat. I used no.7 cut on the smaller pumpkins and 8 on the larger pumpkins and 8 1/2 on the background. As you can see I used a variety of dark colors in the background to make it interesting.

Through the years and many years, I have always picked up any kind of paper mache' Halloween bucket. Most all of mine have paper faces and when lite with little lights the night because a wonderful glow of all kinds of faces. Just love these! The Halloween dress belonged to my Mother -In-Law. When she gave this to me about 10 years ago, I about flipped!The story is that she made it for a school function and she is 93 years young, still drives, sharp as a tack and the best ever! Can't find that kind of fabric now a days. I love putting it out for everyone to see. Check back later, there is more!!

This is what the pears look like once done. They are very juicy to start with and you have to keep turning as you poke the cloves in. HINT, don't use too ripe pears and not too green pears. You can smell whiffs of cloves every once in a while. Puts a smile on my face.

I thought you might like to see how the pumpkin chunks dried down after stringing. The slices are still in the oven, but I will post those when they are drier. I soaked them in strong coffee and then sprinkled cinnamon all over them and put them in a low temp. oven for several hours and a few days. I did this when I was at home and checked often. No worries, other than it takes a lot longer to dry than you would think. They are getting rock hard, which that is what you want. My, does my house smell good. I might have told you that the chunks were at least 2in.x2in. I think next time 3in.x3in. would be better.And make the string longer. However you decide ,they are wonderful. Next I will be trying the sweet potato chunks and maybe just mix them in with some other drieds in an old wooden bowl.

No room in the back and the girls had to fill in around their feet!! Has that ever happened to any of you?

Oh my, what fun was to be had the day we went to Sweet Annie's fall gathering of friends. Meant some newbies and renewed with some friends I hadn't seen for several months. As always you can't go with 3 other girls and not catch the bug of , where did you find that? Did they have anymore? Or are there 3, or 5. I have taught the girls that I help sometimes with decorating that, please buy more than one and 3 is a good number for decorating. They have listened quit well in the past, usually not an issue lately. I'll let you see what our next big project was over the weekend. We spent all day cutting and stringing and GATHERING, our walnuts, Sweet Annie, and corn shucks. A lot of work, but oh so worth it. The end results is that we all get something done at the end of the day to take home and decorate with. Happy Day!

I got this idea from all the left over pieces,(AKA hence the Name). I wanted something different for fall for my table in the living room. I started this, thinking I was going to add some dark oranges to make a diamond shape pattern. But when I started, forgot to do that and ended up with all shades of browns and dirty beige's. Mostly I was to lazy to start over or rip out. I never rip out! I just keep going. You can make this as little as you want or big as you want. I know I will find myself making more of these in other combination. I sewed them by hand,front and back with a whip stitch.

Last weekend, I had a gathering of friends in to do a few primitive items for their fall decorating. Actually I called it a clove and pear party. That just was a good sound to me and got them excited as to what was going on for the afternoon. Well, lots went on and my house smelled wonderful! We did leather britches, which are stings of green beans left to dry and shrivel up. Waxed Indian corn, harvest parched corn, which is a combination of oil and alcohol sprayed on shelled corn and sprinkled with nutmeg and cinnamon. I have more primitive makings up my sleeve, so stay tuned for those. We girls like to do these so called (CRAFTS). I like to think of them as a decorating item for us prim gals! Sorry no pictures of the pears, they have a ways to go before being photographed.

Lately I have been putting out some fall things as you know. This is a gourd that I painted and waxed. I watered down some stencil paint and applied it with a sponge brush and then wiped it off and used briwax that has a dark brown stain in it to finish it up. Now I also did that with the orange one, but used more of a Carmel color. I like them. But also like the natural as well.

I couldn't leave without letting you know that one of the hooked rugs I was working on is now ready to be photographed. I must say that my finger is worn out and I am ready to start a new applique pattern. That is when I get it drawn. I have had this idea in my head and need to get it on paper. I always say as soon as something comes to mind, no matter what you are doing, get it down on paper. The longer you wait to do that, the image isn't as clear as it was when you first thought of it. I have an idea as to the color of wool, and what season it is going to be. Stay tuned for that one. I have a picture to show you. Remember when I said I had gone to my favorite wool store,The Rug Hooking Store, and had shown in a previous post the wools laying on the table. Well that applique is done also. I will show you a sneak peek. I am also curious if anyone is interested in my wool applique patterns sold as kits. This is something that I have been thinking about . Let me know what you think?

I couldn't resist getting out a few fall decorations this past weekend. I tried not to over do it. Simple is better. Right? Well, we will see how long that will last. I know me well enough to say as I go along daily I will be tweaking and adding, and before long everything I own that is fall will be out! Do you do that too? I have news, one of my designs has been accepted for A Primitive Quilt and Project Magazine. It will be featured in the 2012 spring issue. I am excited that I will be a part of this magazine. Something Fun and Different

I am always looking for something to decorate with and while looking in some of the newer magazines that are out, I noticed corn brooms. Well, not to be deterred while in the Mountains, we had sweetcorn and I saved the husks. One of the neighbors up here drilled the holes for me and we used a limb to make the handle. Didn't take an hour or so and this is what I have to hang on a shaker peg or just to stand by an old cupboard. HUMMMMMMM- how many more can I make with acres of corn fields at our farm?? I also gathered up some White Yarrow and Pearly Everlasting to dry. So it was a very productive day crafting and just being out in the mountain air with friends. By the way, they don't get it!! The corn broom that is. But that is ok with me. I love it!!

One thing I can say for being at the cabin, I do get a few things done. One being the rug on this post. I did have a head start on it before I left home. I had run out of the background wool and ordered more and it came just in the nick of time to bring out here with me. Now all I have to do is spend a couple of evenings binding the edges. No, you won't get to see the whole rug, nor will you know the name until I get it photographed for release on goosnest.com. So stayed tuned.

I finished this up in the heat of the summer. No Fun, when you want it to look like winter when you take a picture. Believe it or not, I had punched this in another background color, variegated browns. After looking at it for sometime, the design just wasn't wanting to POP! I think the chosen background really sets off the trays and greenery just as planned. This can be seen on my website goosnest.com under what's new. And under punch needle.

When I come to the cabin this is the best place to get all the natural light by this big window. Other than sitting out doors. This window faces South and no one dares to sit in MY chair!! My rug hooking group invited Cathy Stephens, a teacher from Wisconsin, to teach a coloring class. Well how wonderful it was. I really enjoyed Cathy as a teacher and she got my coloring right on target! This is a sneak peek of the rug I am hooking. The pattern is a new design of mine and as soon as I get it hooked it will be on my website goosnest.com.This rug has been a little interesting, as I always tell everyone, I can't bring the whole house with me, so sometimes I have to make-do. And this rug is going to be just that. I really like how old the colors are making this rug look.

I have been very busy while here at the cabin. Stitching my little heart out! And now for those dreaded directions. That makes me Going Nuts!!! That will take at least 2 days. Two days I could be hooking or something fun! We are seeing a lot of Elk here these last 2 days.This week end is when everyone comes back to their cabins, from their real jobs.Everyone cabin hops during the week end. Have to see what every one is up too. Usually by 4-wheeler. The Going Nuts runner was done by my neighbor friend here ,Pat. I love all the different colors she used for the Acorns. The background lends a wonderful palette for the Acorns to be the stars in this runner. Good job Pat!

Today I am trying to get ready to go back out to the cabin. Too many things on my mind. I can't forget to take all the projects,I think that I will get done, and a list of things that I need to fill the pantry back up. All I really want to do is stitch or hook or create something new! Focus!! That is what I am trying to do. So instead I decided to post something. I took a class from Janice Lee last year and for a fun diversion she showed us a great way to use up some not so friendly wool left overs or some that aren't as thick and pretty as you once thought. I mean the ones I bought years ago and now don't like. Janice Lee was inspired by the work of Nebraska rug hooker, Lulu Myers. Anyway this is what I came up with. It is called sheared wool. You cut or rip at least an inch or inch and a half and pull it through high enough according to the width and then each loop is cut in two. Makes for a nice chair pad and is very soft to sit on. I finished it the same way as for a rug. I think a brown and orange one would be neat for fall,maybe throw in a row of green! Have fun with this one!

Just look at those soft light spots in the background.That is what gave this applique its name. Just looking at that pretty dyed wool makes my heart sing. I usually pick a background piece first and then draw my design to go with it. I was really pleased with this one and just the right size to fit anywhere.

Back from the cool weather and trying to stay indoors with the AC going full blast!!! My how I miss the Mountains!!! I had a fun day yesterday, went to see Janice Lee at The Rug Hooking Store to play in the wool. Remember, in the last blog I was drawing designs, well it was time to colorize them. Primitive Holiday Touches

While at the cabin I was inspired to do a fall mat using different plaid wools on an army blanket to make the runner Going Nuts. I had envisioned Falling Leaves and Acorns just as it is. I was really happy with both projects. Primitive Holiday Touches came to me when I wanted a table cloth at the time I was wanting to decorate for Christmas. I used the printed cotton cloth for the buds to add a little different texture and look to the all wool project. Besides, I had the cotton print left over from all the strawberries I had made for Need'l Love's, new fall book, Pumpkin Patch Threads.

Good Morning from the mountain top! A very quiet and peaceful place I am starting my new blog from.

Our time here is part restful and part work. I get to have full days of doing just what I like to do, create. It might be drawing new patterns, stitching new wool applique, or hooking. All of my favorite things. We have lots of animals and birds to enjoy. I'm always looking out the windows, waiting for an elk, moose, or deer.
